About the owner:
Richard Holyoak was born and raised in Moab Utah as the only son of a rancher. The two bedroom home he and his seven sisters were raised in had no indoor plumbing and only a wood stove to cook on. To Richard, this little rambler with bathrooms, electric stove, and carpet was a luxurious, happy home. His father, Richard Leroy "Roy" Holyoak, was featured in a 1952 National Geographic as a horseback guide for the reporters to capture the beauty of Arches National park on camera.

Richard appeared in the movie The Rio Grande, starting John Wayne, riding one of the many Holyoak horses used in the film. These horses starred in other John Wayne Movies as well.

The Holyoaks came to San Juan County with the Hole- in- the -Rock Mormon Pioneer expedition with livestock and honey bees. Their homestead in Montezuma Creek was frequented by neighboring Indians who they would feed in order to maintain a friendly relationship. When the Holyoaks moved to Moab, Indian Chief Pose and his band of hunters would stop at the ranch every year on their way to hunt in the Lasal Mountains. Henry Holyoak would butcher a cow or pig and smoke it in a pit in the ground and harvest vegetables from the garden. Read the amazing stories for yourself during your comfy stay.
Internet Service: If state-of-the-art electronic access and equipment is important to you on your vacation, this cabin is not for you. Once again, internet service can be weak and slow due to the fact that the only internet service available on the ranch is via satellite.

TV: Live satellite television is available for your convenience. There are also some old VCR tapes available to watch on the tv. You are also welcome to bring your own computer and movies for entertainment.

Recreational opportunities near the ranch: Arches and Canyonlands national parks and Dead Horse Point State Park are popular places to visit in the Moab area. Recreational activities near the ranch include horse and mule rides from the ranch, hiking at Fisher Towers and Mary Jane Canyon nearby, and river rafting. If you are staying at the ranch and have booked a river trip on the daily section of the Colorado River, you may be able to coordinate transportation from Highway 128 near the boat ramps without having to drive into Moab. Discuss this option with the outfitter you are rafting with.

Pets: If you bring dogs to the ranch you will be charged an additional pet fee. Dogs must be on a leash at all times or under full-control voice command when you are walking on the ranch. Please clean up after your pets and collect and remove droppings from the property. Pets may not be left unattended in the Guest House. You may be billed for any damage that is discovered after your visit. There are a few kennels available for your use.

Children should be carefully monitored at all times. The river and river banks are not safe places to play, and life jackets should be used at all times if you plan to be near the river. Swimming in the river is not advised. The rock formations on the ranch are fun to climb, but guests should use extreme caution and make sure to monitor children at all times. Guests may visit the horse and mule corrals. Again, use caution. People are responsible for their own safety on the ranch and the ranch will not be held liable for any accidents which might occur.

Fishing: If you wish to fish in the river, you must obtain a license from the State of Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. The most common fish is catfish, however, there are some protected fish species in the river.
The name "Navajo" comes from the late 18th century via the Spanish (Apaches de) Navajó "(Apaches of) Navajó", which was derived from the Tewa navah? "fields adjoining a ravine". The Navajo call themselves Diné, which is translated to mean "the people" (most Native American groups call themselves by names that mean "the people"). Nonetheless, most Navajo now acquiesce to being called "Navajo."
The Navajo traditionally live in octagonal houses known as hogans. Hogans are houses of forked poles and brush covered with earth. The navajos have many types of hogans to live in and get special cerimonies done for them. According to Kehoe, this style of housing is distinctive to the Navajo, even going as far as saying that, "even today, a solidly constructed, log walled Hogan is preferred by many Navajo families.
Until they came into contact with the Spanish and Pueblos, the Navajo were hunters and gatherers. They adopted farming techniques and crops from the Pueblo people, growing mainly corn, beans, and squash. As a result of Spanish influence, they began herding sheep and goats, depending on them for their use in trade and food. They turned harvested wool into blankets and clothing which could be used for trading or personal use. They also depended on their flocks of sheep for meat. Their lives depended on sheep so much that, to the Navajo, sheep were in a sense currency and a mark of social status.
The Navajo/Diné speak dialects of the language family referred to as Athabaskan. These people were once a single ethnic group that probably came from near the Great Slave Lake, in the modern Northwest Territories of Canada, having crossed the Bering land bridge thousands of years previously. In addition to language speakers residing in Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona, Athabaskan speakers are also found living today in Alaska and parts of northern Canada. An aboriginal people known as Dene live in an area centered around Great Slave Lake and have communities in the far north of adjacent provinces. The Apache, living in the American Southwest and other nearby areas, are also Southern Athabaskan speakers and are closely related to the Navajo/Diné. Despite the time elapsed, these people reportedly can still understand the language of their long-lost cousins, the Navajo. [3] Archaeological and historical evidence suggests that the Athabaskan ancestors of the Navajo and Apache entered the Southwest after 1000 AD, with substantial population increases occurring in the 13th century. Navajo oral traditions are said to retain references of this migration.
You will love your stay with these people in their nomadic yet modern world.
